Dear x,
My fourxyear research experience since the completion of my undergraduateprogram in 1997 has helped me to develop from a Bachelor in Engineering to aMaster in Science. My research activities cover a wide range of fields includinganalytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic catalysis, environmentalscience, instrumental analysis, nanoxanalytical chemistry, and biologicalanalytical chemistry. I am proud to say that I have accomplished achievements inalmost every of those fields. Based on my research findings, I have published adozen research papers. In particular, I have received patents from the PatentOffice of China for two major research results "The Preparation Method of aSolid Acid Catalyst with High Selectivity and Activity for Esterification" and"A New Reaction Technology and the Equipment for Gas Phase Esterification". Bothof them have significant value in industrial application.
Nevertheless, I am acutely aware that, in the research fields I aminterested in, there are still so many difficult subjects and challengesawaiting for solution. In physical chemistry, China is relatively backward inthe fields of catalyst development, catalyst inactivation, reaction dynamics, reaction mechanism, geochemical reaction mechanism, environmentalxchemicalreaction mechanism. In analytical chemistry, China lags relatively behind itsWestern counterparts in areas such as instrumental analysis and theoreticalanalytical chemistry. Basically, China relies on import for largexscaleanalytical instruments. By contrast, the United States has many worldxleadingacademic specialists and encourages interdisciplinary programs. It will accordme a stimulating and liberal academic environment, apart from the sophisticatedresearch facilities. Rice University is my top priority in applying for a Ph.D.program and I choose to specialize in physical chemistry or in analyticalchemistry.
At Rice University, I plan to learn broaderxbased foundational theories inmy chosen fields. With my solid interdisciplinary knowledge and my ability forthe quick assimilation of new knowledge, I intend to secure for myself a RAstatus to directly start my laboratory research under the guidance of my futureadvisor. I can also work as TA so that I can study while teaching and conductingmy internship. I can apply, test and consolidate the theoretical knowledge thatI acquire in the process of internship and degree program. Finally, throughtheoretical study and scientific research, I would endeavor to produce awellxwritten dissertation in which I hope to achieve some breakthroughs on boththe theoretical and the research level.
After obtaining my Ph.D. degree, I intend to enter one of the top researchinstitutes to delve deeper into some challenging subjects and to achieve someresearch fruits. After accumulating certain research experience at an actualresearch institute, I plan to return to China to work as a professor at aleading Chinese university, a position which will enable me to train many moreacademic professionals in physical or analytical chemistry. At the same time, Iwill also dedicate myself to turning my laboratory research results into yetmore patents and inventions, which can further be developed into products withpragmatic applications.
During my studies in the United States, I will attempt at some detailedobservations of its capital market, the most mature of its kind in the world, toacquire some necessary knowledge in company management and capital operation. For ultimately my career objective is to establish my own company to manufacturemy own products, especially those environmentallyxfriendly chemical products, based on my patents and inventions.
Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:
Hello, thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to readthis application for studying abroad.
My name is Huang Peng and I come from the No. 9 Middle School in Laiyang. Iam a native of the No. 9 Middle School, but now I have to add the name of thereviewer to the front. Although the college entrance examination is notsatisfactory, I am still willing to call myself a "Nine Middle School Person"when I talk about my identity at this time. These three words cover almost myentire youth and will continue to accompany me in the future. This time Ireturned to my alma mater as a reviewer. Thousands of thoughts came to my mind. The bits and pieces of the three years of high school were played back in mymind like movie clips. The original bold words and lofty ambitions seem to bestill reverberating above the alma mater. Enduring; the teachings of my mentorand the encouragement of my friends will last forever under the polishing oftime, and the words surging in my heart.
Although the youthfulness when he first entered his alma mater has becomemature, but thinking of that period of ignorance, his heart is still unable tocalm for a long time. With a vigorous heart under my immature appearance, Istarted my high school life. Maybe it was my twoxyear career as a monitor injunior high school that made me look more stable, or maybe my high schoolentrance examination results entered the class teacher’s "Dharma Eye". In short,I am honored to be granted the important task of monitor, and since then Istarted my three years of work so far. Another squad leaders career.
The class in the first year and second year of high school was a group ofpassionate youth clubs. We talked about ancient and modern China and foreigncountries, enthusiastic words, commented on the country, frivolous but tireless.Under the influence of such a group of revengeful confidantes, under theteachings of knowledgeable teachers, my grades have also started to improvesteadily, and more importantly, my thinking has taken shape from then onxI wantto be a strong one! During the day and night with the teachers and classmates, Ilearned something from each of them. I learned to be calm, I learned to betolerant, I understood gratitude... Each of them is a living textbook. Page bypage, book by book, even though I no longer live under the same roof, I canstill find out the "reading notes" for them very quickly. In the process ofgrowing up with everyone, I am also slowly becoming strongerxI have been firmlyin the top few "seats" in my grades, and my mind is becoming more and moremature.
In the end, he was promoted to the third year of high school with relativelygood grades and entered a brand new class. Although many things have to berevisited, I can easily integrate into the new class after coming from the firstyear and second year of high school. I have always believed that as long as Ipay my sincerity, I can capture my sincerity. Although I have only been togetherfor less than a year, my high school classmates and I are as close as friendswho have known each other for many years. We started the night battle together, immersed ourselves in the study, and worked hard together until we finallyrushed to the battlefield of the college entrance examination together. It is apity that I fell into the sand and couldnt keep up with them. However, "theshort stay is for higher flight", one day, I will catch up, fight side by sidewith them, and write the glory of our Nine Middle School!
After three years of high school, I grew up and matured. I am always willingto compare myself to a traveler, rushing to distant places one step at a time.On this road of life, I don’t want to lag behind anyone, and I don’t want tofollow others at the same time. I want to take a path that belongs to me. Leaveyour unique figure. Although I am a science student, I really like a person tothink about life quietly. I am not afraid of loneliness. Some people say thatloneliness is the person you are facing, and his emotions are not at the samefrequency as yours. I agree very much, but I don’t think I’m alone. Whether it’smy friends who are flying high, or my friends who “stay behind” like me, theyare my confidantes. With them, I am not lonely.
Although I am still struggling on the road to the college entranceexamination, it is no longer my goal to simply get high scores. However, goingto a prestigious university like yours is indeed what I want. People live forthe future, and I am fighting for the future this time!

Dear x:
Since learning to read from a very young age, literature has been mygreatest love. I am fascinated by the impact that written words have on society, and how they influence the way that people interpret issues such as war orpolitics. Literature has shaped our modern world; it is the most diverse subjectto study as it encompasses all aspects of life. My passion for reading andwriting has encouraged me to write creatively and to read a wide variety ofnovels and poetry outside school. I enjoy a broad range of classical and modernliterature and my favourite novelists include Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Ihave loved studying Chaucer and Blake in school but tend to read more modernpoetry at home, including the works of Eliot, Heaney and Plath. Theinterpretation of literature from other cultures is pivotal to our explorationand understanding of historical and social contexts throughout the literaryworld. French literature complements my study of English, for instance theimportance of courtly love and the development of poetic style in eachcountry. I have a great interest in French culture; I enjoy French film and haveloved studying the work of Truffaut at A2-level as well as reading a few simplenovels at home.
My passion for the French culture also extends to my interest in History. This AS-level has not only broadened my knowledge of French history (I studiedthe French Wars of Religion for my coursework) but has also enhanced myanalytical and essay-writing skills. I also study Psychology and have a greatinterest in human interaction, which complements and supports my study ofliterature. In English I have developed my writing skills; my comparative andanalytical skills have been particularly important for this years courseworkessay, in which I am comparing Tess of the dUrbervilles by Thomas Hardy andThe Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. I enjoy discussing literature andattend a fortnightly reading group at school, which has continued to increase myunderstanding and enjoyment of the classics and introduced me to severalsignificant modern works. Being able to hold discussions in French has alsogiven me great personal satisfaction. I enjoy my conversation classes with thelanguage assistant and I recently went on a French exchange to Compiegne. Thisexperience was hugely beneficial in improving my understanding and speakingskills. I spent the week completely immersed in French language and culture; myconfidence to speak increased enormously and I came love the country and itstraditions all the more.
Outside school, I thoroughly enjoy my musical pursuits. I play the FrenchHorn in a Youth Orchestra and intend to take my Grade 8 in 2007; I also sing ina Madrigal Choir. I perform in three to four concerts a year, including theschool Christmas concert; this year I will be playing a movement from Mozartsfourth horn concerto. My interest in music has required good organisationalskills, as I helped to run a choir at school for a competition. I thoroughlyenjoyed this experience, and it allowed me to develop my leadership skillswhilst working in a team. My duties as a prefect have also contributed towardsthese skills; I assist a Year Eight form with a team of other prefects. In JulyI took part in a World Challenge Leadership Day, participating in groupactivities where each team member had a chance to act as the leader. I am alsoinvolved in the Pyramid voluntary organisation, which is an after schoolactivity club for children with low self-esteem or mild behavioural problems. Inthis capacity, I work with a team of three other club leaders, and each week weorganise a new activity for the children.
I know that I am ideally suited to a joint degree in English and French, and I intend to use my skills and interests in contributing to universityactivities. I am highly committed to my studies, and look forward to pursuingthem in a challenging course at university.
Yours sincerely,
